About Cambridge Reads

Cambridge READS is a citywide book club. The entire community of Cambridge is invited to read the same book and join in book discussions.

This year's selection is, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez.

Book discussions and special events will be held throughout the city this fall. In addition, the author will visit Cambridge on Thursday October 16th. Tickets to this event will be free but not available until fall.

The idea of a citywide book club began about seven years ago with Nancy Pearl, a librarian in Seattle. Since that time more than one hundred cities across the country have begun reading together. The goals of Cambridge READS are to promote literacy and the love of reading and to increase connections within the Cambridge community.

This year is the sixth annual Cambridge READS. Past titles have been, The Color of Water by James McBride, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, and Three Cups of Tea; One Man's Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.

Cambridge READS is presented by the Cambridge Public Library, with support from the Friends of the Library and Harvard Book Store.

Please read the book and join the discussion. You may find scheduled discussions at the event link on this website, or start a discussion on your own. Starting in September the public is invited to join the Cambridge Reads Blog, watch for details on this website!
